Title: The “Appliance of Science”? Appeals to Medical and Scientific Expertise in British Advertising, 1930-1980

Supervisors: Dr James Stark and Dr Adrian Wilson, University of Leeds; Mr Alistair Moir, Archive Manager, History of Advertising Trust

The project investigates the use of scientific and medical motifs in modern British advertising, thereby shedding light on both the history of advertising and the development of modern medical and scientific authority. The specific focus will be the marketing of food products for which plentiful archives are held by the collaborating institution, the History of Advertising Trust. The student will have the opportunity to develop the focus of the project in line with their own interests and skills, but key phases of focus might be: the 1930s and the use of then newly-discovered vitamins to promote specific foods; World War II when the British government went to great lengths to define and publicise what constituted a ‘healthy’ diet; and the post-NHS landscape from 1948 when responsibility for everyday public health was reconfigured.
