Is There a Politics of Scale?

Politics
have always been involved in questions of historical scale. Sometimes
the politics are more obvious—at no time more so than a century ago,
when scientific internationalism encouraged an emphasis on global
intellectual communities and the universal foundations and reach of
scientific ideas. In this paper I will survey the relatively long
history of global and international-scale history. In an era when even
Europe seems radical as a spatial point of interrogation (whether
because you think it should be provincialized, or just politically cauterized), questions of scale have returned as an urgent matter.

Sluga és Professora d’Història internacional a la universitat de Sydney
i al European University Institute. Té una llarga trajectòria en
l’estudi de la construcció política i identitària de la nació i de
l’internacionalisme. El seu treball aprofundeix en les interseccions,
interaccions i interferències entre allò nacional, internacional i
transnacional. Entre les seves publicacions s’inclouen un fòrum especial
sobre història transnacional de les organitzacions internacionals, al
Journal of Global History (2011), el llibre Internationalism in the Age
of Nationalism (UPenn, 2013) o el volum editat Internationalisms: A Twentieth-Century History (Cambridge, 2017).
