University of Cambridge Department of History and Philosophy of Science Generation to Reproduction Programme Two two-year positions, both available from 1 September 2013 with closing date of 27 March: 1. Research Associate in History of Reproduction The Department seeks to appoint a two-year postdoctoral Research Associate to contribute to a Wellcome Trust strategic award in the   history of medicine on the theme 'Generation to Reproduction'. The successful candidate will carry out independent, full-time research on a topic within this broad theme in a historical period between 1550 and the present day. From this research s/he is expected to produce at least one substantial published article a year. REGISTRATION NOW OPEN Naval Expertise and the Making of the Modern World Wolfson College, University of Oxford 10-11 May 2013 This conference examines the generation of expertise in naval contexts and traces how such developments helped shape the modern world.  Expertise will be considered not only as knowledge but also as methods and practices central to the evolution of modern nation states and empires.  In the search for useful knowledge and in answering the demands of global infrastructure, navies have not only pursued military aims, but have also encouraged the formation of other areas of expertise, whether medical, technological, or bureaucratic. Recent research has identified navies as forerunners of modern scientific research, social disciplinary practices, and political economy for instance. The Swiss Society for the History of Medicine and Science invites applications for the Henry-E.-Sigerist-Prize for the promotion of young scholars in the history of medicine and science. Deadline for application: March 31, 2013 The prize was founded in 1967 by Mr. and Mss. Guggenheim-Schnurr from Basel in order to award outstanding young scholars in the field of history of medicine and science. Applicants should submit studies completed within the last two years, i.e. - articles published in journals - dissertations - printed books - works of another kind which have been selected by the jury or proposed to it. The texts have to be written in German, French, Italian or English and to be related to Switzerland by content, authorship or institution.
