Llamado de ponencias Coloquio internacional: “ Historias alternativas de la fisiología: En la búsqueda de miradas comparadas y transnacionales en América Latina ” Bogotá, Universidad del Rosario. Agosto 7 y 8 de 2014. Con este coloquio queremos iniciar la construcción de una red de investigadores interesados en la historia de la fisiología y sus relaciones con la sociedad y la cultura desde una perspectiva latinoamericana (Red Latinoamericana de Historia de la Fisiología, ReLaHiFi ). Buscamos identificar problemas transversales y nuevos campos de investigación histórica sobre la fisiología que alienten la construcción de análisis comparados y transnacionales, a la vez que conjuguen de manera creativa diversas aproximaciones historiográficas. CFP: Science and Society in Africa 3--4 Sept 2014, Stellenbosch ABSTRACT SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 3 March 2014 Please e-mail abstracts to: scisocafrica@gmail.com Africa faces the challenge of improving the critical understanding of science among non-scientists while respecting and responding to the fact that the history of science has been dominated by Europe and the USA. Scientists in Africa must also grapple with colonial legacies of the use of a continent as a laboratory and a field-site. At the same time, Africa presents a challenge to science studies disciplines (e.g. philosophy, anthropology, communications) as they have evolved in Europe and the United States. At present there is a perceived gap between two positions: epistemic relativism which situates science as merely one socially constructed way of knowing among others of equal validity and realism, which accords it greater status as a universally true body of knowledge. Joint fellowship MPIWG Berlin V&A London

The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin (Max Planck Research Group Art and Knowledge in Pre-Modern Europe; Director: Prof. Dr. Sven Dupré) in collaboration with the Victoria and Albert Museum (contact: Dr. Marta Ajmar, Head of Postgraduate Programme, V&A/RCA History of Design, Victoria and Albert Museum, London) announces one postdoctoral fellowship for three months between January 1 and December 31, 2015. The tenure of the fellowship is to be divided between the two institutes: the first and third month will be spent at the MPIWG, the second month at the V&A. The fellow will be offered research facilities at both institutions. Outstanding junior and senior scholars (including those on sabbatical leave from their home institutions) are invited to apply. Monsters and the Monstrous   is a biannual peer-reviewed global journal that serves to explore the broad concept of ‘The Monster’ and ‘The Monstrous’ from a multifaceted interdisciplinary perspective. The journal publishes works that seek to investigate and assess the enduring influence and imagery of monsters and the monstrous on human culture throughout history.
