Particularly since the 18th century, thinking and working comparatively has been crucial to fields as wide-ranging as pathology, physiology, microbiology, pharmacy, epidemiology, veterinary science, ethology, evolutionary biology, psychology and anthropology. SHOT Levinson Prize: deadline April 15

A quick reminder and encouragement to apply for the SHOT Levinson Prize--the deadline is April 15: The Samuel Eleazar and Rose Tartakow Levinson Prize is awarded each year for a single-authored, unpublished essay in the history of technology that explicitly examines, in some detail, a technology or technological device or process within the framework of social or intellectual history. It is intended for younger scholars and new entrants into the profession. Manuscripts already published or accepted for publication are not eligible. In order to be considered, manuscripts must be in English and of a length suitable for publication as an article in Technology and Culture--approximately 7,500 words (not including notes) and 100 notes. CALL FOR PAPERS ON CHEMICAL ENGINEERING & BIOGRAPHY

I am seeking participants for a panel on chemical engineering & biography for the 10 th International Conference on the History of Chemistry, to be held in Aveiro, Portugal, on 9-12 September, 2015. The theme of the conference is chemical biography in the 21 st century. The conference will critically examine the conceptual turn in the historiography of chemistry, from biography as a “whiggish” and hagiographical approach to biography as a genre which analyzes thematic problems and social-cultural-questions. Final Call for Applications: PhD Studentship on Evolutionary Science and Religion at Newman University, Birmingham, UK

Applications are invited for  one fully-funded PhD Studentship  for three years (full-time) for UK or EU students to work within a broader multidisciplinary research team on the ‘Science and Religion: Exploring the Spectrum’ project within Newman’s newly created Science and Religion in Society Research Group. The Studentship includes a subsistence grant in line with the recommendations of the UK research Councils (currently £13,863 p.a. for 2014-15) with all fees paid.
