History of Science: Fully-funded PhD Studentship: Swansea Science: The First 100 Years Closing date: 30th April 2015 Key Information The Department of History and Classics, Swansea University, invites applications from suitably-qualified UK/EU candidates for a doctoral studentship, funded by the College of Arts and Humanities, to conduct research on the history of the STEM disciplines at Swansea University in advance of the university’s centenary in 2020. The recipient of the studentship will contribute to our understanding of the evolution and significance of work in the sciences at Swansea since the institution’s foundation. There will be some scope to shape the precise direction of the research according to his/her interests and expertise. International Workshop: The Establishment of Genetic Counseling in the Second Half of the 20th Century Berlin, February 2-3, 2016 Deadline: May 17, 2015 The rapid development of molecular genetics in the 1950s not only led to the establishment of human genetics as a separate discipline, it also fundamentally changed the thinking about disease and health. Genetics became indispensable for studying the causation, formation, and development of diseases. Yet, because of the low potential for an actual cure of genetic diseases, genetic counseling received special significance as "the most immediate and practical service that genetics can render in medicine and surgery,” according to the WHO Expert Committee on Human Genetics in 1964.
