2016 American Association for the History of Medicine Annual Meeting Minneapolis Call for Papers The American Association for the History of Medicine (AAHM) invites abstracts for papers in any area of medical history for its 89th annual meeting, to be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, 28 April to 1 May 2016 . The AAHM welcomes papers on the history of health and healing; the history of medical ideas, practices, and institutions; and the history of illness, disease, or public health. Submissions pertaining to all eras and regions of the world are welcome. Papers and panels that expand the horizons of medical history and engage related fields are particularly encouraged. Call for Papers – Organizing the World of Healing Goods: Materia Medica, Pharmacopeias, and the Codification of Therapeutic Knowledge in the Early Modern World Matthew Crawford, Kent State University Joseph Gabriel, University of Wisconsin, Madison We seek proposals for papers related to the theme of materia medica, national pharmacopeias, and the scientific, economic, and political organization of therapeutic knowledge in the early modern world. In particular, we are interested in papers that examine the role of pharmacopeias in the creation and organization of scientific knowledge about materia medica and pharmaceuticals during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The establishment and promulgation of pharmacopeias by municipal, national and imperial governments during this period can be understood as efforts to standardize knowledge and practice under normative frameworks that worked to advance state interests as well as imperial and national aspirations. Just a brief reminder that the deadline for the next round of research grants from the Scientific Instrument Society (SIS) is Tuesday 1st September 2015.   The SIS awards small grants, of up to £500 each, for research on the history of scientific instruments. Applicants do not need to have any institutional affiliation and applications that are for less than the full amount are just as welcome - a properly costed proposal with a clear relevance to the Society's interests in historic scientific instruments, a realistic timetable and a tangible result are the most important factors that the committee will be considering.  Please note that the grant awarded will be paid against actual expenditure and funds cannot be paid in advance.  The grant is intended to cover items such as travel, accommodation (excluding meals) and photocopying costs.   Please note that we cannot fund conference travel.
