Imagen
Edited by Frederick A. de Armas and James Mandrell. The Gastronomical Arts in Spain includes essays that span from the medieval to the contemporary world, providing a taste of the many ways in which the art of gastronomy developed in Spain over time. This collection encompasses a series of cultural objects and a number of interests, ranging from medicine to science, from meals to banquets, and from specific recipes to cookbooks. The contributors consider Spanish cuisine as presented in a variety of texts, including literature, medical and dietary prescriptions, historical documents, co okbooks, and periodicals. They draw on literary texts in their socio-historical context in order to explore concerns related to the production and consumption of food for reasons of hunger, sustenance, health, and even gluttony. Structured into three distinct "courses" that focus on the history of foodstuffs, food etiquette, and culinary fashion, The Gastronomical Arts in Spain brings together ...

Call for Contributions - Technology and Language

The sixth issue of "Technology and Language" has now appeared, and withit a new call for contributions that appeals generally to philosophy and history of technology, linguistics and engineering education, literary scholars and art historians. https://soctech.spbstu.ru/en/issue/6/   Guest-edited by CHENG Lin, "The Construction of the Robot in Language Culture" explores the history of a term that was introduced a little over 100 years ago by Czech author Karel Capek. Several papers analyze the pre-history and reception of the term that was simply translated as "worker" in Soviet Russia but became a new kind of thing, namelly a "robot" in many other languages. Two interviews with Japanese robotics engineer Hiroshi Ishiguro and with German philosopher Markus Gabriel follow up on a previous encounter of theirs. Mark Coeckelbergh's 2011 paper "You, robot: on the linguistic construction of artificial others” has prompted six responses and a ...

CfP: The Meaning of Epistemic Injustice in Philosophy (Munich)

Place: Munich School of Philosophy, Kaulbachstraße 35, 80539 Munich Organized by Lena Schützle and Sabrina Kofahl Submission deadline: July 15th, 2022 Weblink to the CfP in English and German Topic: The question about the relevance of knowledge and sciences for a society built on equality and justice is urgent in the current philosophical debate and its related fields. Not only the factors for successful transformation are being challenged, but also the extent to which structures of generating and communicating knowledge are inherently violent. What are the restrictions limiting access to participation in philosophical debates? Are these restrictions justifiable or are they affected by sexist, racist and classist prejudices? Practical and intercultural Philosophy as well as transformative research offer approaches to questioning universalisms and disclosing practices of othering. Media ethics provides understanding on how master and base narratives shape the perception of knowledge an...

Open Access book publication:   https://muse.jhu.edu/book/98273 Rens Bod, “World of Patterns: A Global History of Knowledge”, JHU Press, 2022. A comprehensive account of the methods of knowledge production throughout human history and across the globe. The idea that the world can be understood through patterns and the principles that govern them is one of the most important human insights—it may also be our greatest survival strategy. Our search for patterns and principles began 40,000 years ago, when striped patterns were engraved on mammoths' bones to keep track of the moon's phases. What routes did human knowledge take to grow from these humble beginnings through many detours and dead ends into modern understandings of nature and culture? In this work of unprecedented scope, Rens Bod removes the Western natural sciences from their often-central role to bring us the first global history of human knowledge. Having sketched the history of the humanities in his ground-breaking A ...

CfP: Disability at the Intersection of History, Culture, Religion, Gender, and Health

Deadline: May 6, 2022 Disability is a living human experience. It is not merely a medical or biological phenomenon, and it is not only the subject of sciences. Perspectives on disability have evolved historically, theologically, and medically. Academics and disability activists have increasingly come to view disability as more than an individual medical diagnosis, often highlighting it as an issue of social justice and equity. As such, there is a need for further collaboration between the sciences and the humanities to deepen our understanding of disability in all of its complexities. Using interdisciplinary approaches to examine disability as fluid and dynamic condition can help us understand it as an identity and as social construct. The aim of this Special Issue is to encourage interdisciplinary research that offers critical analysis of how disabilities have been viewed in historical terms, the complexities of the religious meanings of disability, disabilities as social/cultural con...
